Description
The harbor seal is common along the Dutch, Belgian, and British coasts and in the Wadden Sea. They like to rest on sandbanks and often haul out in large groups. They're a protected species.
Behavior
Seals are curious but can become aggressive if approached, especially mothers with pups. They bite hard and their wounds infect easily (seal finger).
What to do
Keep at least 30 meters away, on land and in the water. Never touch a pup — even if it looks alone. Call the seal rescue center if an animal looks sick or injured.
Pro tip
A seal lying on the beach is NOT sick or abandoned — they're resting and regulating their body temperature. The 30-meter rule is legally required in Natura 2000 areas.
Interesting fact
Seals can stay underwater for up to 30 minutes and dive to depths of 200 meters. They sleep half-awake while continuing to float.
