Description
The common buzzard is the most widespread bird of prey in the Netherlands, seen in nearly every forest and meadow area. It likes to soar over open ground hunting for mice and moles.
Behavior
Buzzards are solitary and territorial. They aren't dangerous to people but actively defend their nest by screeching and flying close. They don't dive-bomb people.
What to do
No special action needed. Enjoy the bird from a safe distance. Don't disturb the nest during breeding season (April–July).
Pro tip
A circling buzzard over an open field calls with a distinctive 'pee-oo' sound. It's a sign of a healthy ecosystem with plenty of mice.
Interesting fact
Buzzards can see UV light, which lets them spot urine trails left by mice that mark the routes of small mammals.
