Description
The sand lizard is the rarest lizard in the Netherlands, found on sandy heathland and dunes. Males develop a spectacular green color on their flanks during the mating season. They're a protected species.
Behavior
Sand lizards are active during the day and love the sun. They're very shy and disappear quickly into vegetation. They can shed their tail if grabbed.
What to do
Keep your distance and observe from afar. Don't leave marked paths in sand lizard habitat — their nest burrows are invisible in the sand.
Pro tip
The best time to spot sand lizards is on sunny mornings in May and June, when males bask on open sandy ground. Approach slowly and low.
Interesting fact
Female sand lizards choose their mate based on the intensity of his green color — an indicator of health and low parasite load.
