Description
The wild boar is a powerful, intelligent animal found across much of the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany. They live in family groups led by the oldest sow. Males (boars) live solitary lives outside the rutting season.
Behavior
Wild boars are active at dusk and at night. They root through the ground for roots, insects, and mushrooms. A sow with piglets is the most dangerous and can attack quickly if she feels her young are threatened.
What to do
Stay calm and make yourself look big. Do NOT run — boars are faster than you. Climb a tree if possible. Make noise from a distance to warn them off. Always avoid a sow with her piglets.
Pro tip
On the Veluwe, most attacks happen in the morning and evening. Talk loudly or use a walking stick to warn them off in advance.
Interesting fact
Wild boars can run up to 90 km/h over short distances and are excellent swimmers. An adult male can weigh 200 kg.
