Description
The red fox is one of the most adaptable predators in NW Europe, living in forests, meadows, dunes, and even cities. It's recognizable by its orange-red coat and white belly.
Behavior
Foxes are mainly active at night but can also be seen during the day. They're generally wary of people. A fox that wanders restlessly during the day and seems to seek contact may be sick (rabies still exists in Eastern Europe).
What to do
Keep your distance and never touch a fox. Scare it off if it gets too close. Don't leave food near a campsite or tent — foxes are opportunistic eaters.
Pro tip
Protect your food supply in a sealed container. Foxes can open zippers and tear through bags.
Interesting fact
Foxes use the earth's magnetic field to navigate and hunt. They almost always leap toward the northeast on a successful pounce on mice.
