Description
The false widow is a spider that resembles the black widow but is less dangerous. It's becoming more common in the Netherlands due to climate change. It nests in dark corners, sheds, and cellars.
Behavior
False widows are shy and rarely bite people. However, a bite can be painful and may cause local swelling and muscle cramps in sensitive individuals. They aren't lethal.
What to do
Treat the bite like a wasp sting: clean the wound, cool the area. For severe symptoms or spreading redness: see a doctor. If possible, bring the spider along (in a jar).
Pro tip
Check gloves, shoes, and clothing that has been outside or in a shed for a while before putting them on.
Interesting fact
The Steatoda spider produces a venom that can be neutralized with black widow antivenom, proving how closely related the two species are.
