Description
The roe deer is the smallest native deer species in the Netherlands and is found almost everywhere. They live solitarily or in small family groups. Bucks have small antlers that are shed every year.
Behavior
Roe deer are active at dusk and in the early morning. They are shy and flee quickly when disturbed. During the rutting season (July–August), bucks can display territorial behavior.
What to do
Keep a calm distance and avoid sudden movements. Never touch a fawn, even if it looks abandoned — the mother is always nearby.
Pro tip
A 'barking' sound from a roe deer is an alarm call. If you hear this, stand still — the animal has already spotted you.
Interesting fact
Roe deer can keep a fertilized egg dormant for months (embryonic diapause), so birth always falls in the favorable spring season.
