Description
Mosquitoes are small biting flies whose females drink blood for egg production. In NW Europe mosquitoes aren't dangerous in the sense of spreading disease, but their bites are very irritating.
Behavior
Mosquitoes are active from spring through autumn, peaking around sunrise and sunset. They're drawn to CO2, body heat, and scent. They breed in standing water.
What to do
Use DEET-based mosquito repellent. Wear light-colored clothing with long sleeves and long pants. Avoid standing water sources near camp. A fine-mesh mosquito net is essential for overnight camping.
Pro tip
Remove standing water around your camp (puddles, containers). Citronella candles only work in still conditions and at short range.
Interesting fact
Mosquitoes select hosts partly based on blood type — type O is more attractive than others. People who exhale more CO2 (larger people) get bitten more often.
