Description
The European hare is a large, fast animal of open fields and meadows. It's recognizable by its very long ears with black tips. Unlike the rabbit, the hare lives above ground.
Behavior
Hares are active at dusk and at night. During the day they lie in a shallow scrape (form) and are almost invisible. During the mating season (spring), males box each other spectacularly.
What to do
No action needed. If a hare stares at you and freezes, walk calmly around it. They can bite hard if picked up.
Pro tip
A motionless leveret lying on the ground is NOT abandoned — the mother only returns 1–2 times a night to nurse. Don't touch it.
Interesting fact
Hares can reach 70 km/h and use a zigzag run to shake off predators. They sleep with their eyes open.
