Description
The common wasp is the most widespread stinging insect in NW Europe. They live in colonies of up to 10,000 workers and nest in the ground, tree cavities, and buildings. Recognizable by yellow-black bands.
Behavior
Wasps are active in summer and seek out sugary food. They're aggressive when their nest is disturbed. In autumn (August–September) they're at their most aggressive due to changes in the nest cycle.
What to do
If you disturb a nest: move away slowly, cover your face, and only run if you're already being stung. If stung: remove the stinger (for bees), cool the area, take an antihistamine. If you have a known allergy: always carry an EpiPen and call emergency services.
Pro tip
Never eat or drink from open cans outdoors — wasps crawl inside. Drink from clear glasses or use a straw. Sweet perfume attracts wasps.
Interesting fact
Wasps are extremely useful insects: over a summer, a single colony destroys hundreds of kilos of caterpillars, flies, and other insects as food for the larvae.
