Description
The European hornet is the largest wasp in NW Europe, up to 3.5 cm long. It's recognizable by its brown-red and yellow pattern. It nests in hollow trees and buildings. It's a protected species in the Netherlands.
Behavior
Hornets are less aggressive than common wasps but will sting if their nest is threatened. Their sting is painful but no more dangerous than a wasp sting for non-allergic people.
What to do
Keep at least 5 meters away from a hornet's nest. Move away calmly if you see a hornet, and don't swat at it. For a nest in a building: contact a beekeeper or your local council.
Pro tip
Hornets are active late into the night and are drawn to light. Turn off outdoor lighting near a nest.
Interesting fact
Hornets hunt other wasps, flies, and even honey bees as food for their larvae. They play an important role as predators in the ecosystem.
